Senior Benjamin Thiss is a sprint freestyler for the team, competing in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. Last season he led off the 400 freestyle relay at states. This year, he hopes to make an even bigger impact.

December marks the beginning of competition for the SHS Varsity swim team. The aqua Aviators will dive into their first meet of the season in Louisville on Sat., Dec. 6.

“This is the earliest in the season we have ever had a travel meet, and although it is not a big meet, I’m pretty excited,” junior Jory Gould said.

This Louisville meet is designed to just give the swimmers a chance to get a good race experience in a low-stress environment. Junior Varsity and Varsity will both attend the meet.

“We usually don’t compete in many of the same meets with JV, but for the first meet of the season, I think it will be good,” Gould said.

In the meantime since the season is progressing, the Varsity team is starting morning practices. These workouts are Tuesday and Thursday morning at 5:15 a.m. and are intended for the swimmers to work on their specialty strokes.

“It is definitely a struggle to get up early enough for practice, but by the time school starts, I feel a lot better,” senior Rick Niu said.
