Organic Chemistry, The Evolving universe, and Solar Energy are not typical courses seen in the list of classes provided by SHS. However, the school has provided an even greater flexibility with courses by providing independent study bells for some seniors.

“Being able to take gym online really saved me time to take the courses I really wanted to,” senior Anu Roy-Chaudry said.

EdX is a non-profit online initiative created by founding partners Harvard and MIT that is website that offers interactive online classes. One of the options for AP Physics’ summer homework was taking a class online through EdX.

It offers courses in countless topics including biology, business, chemistry, statistics and more.

“I took a course on renewable energy which was pretty cool. Taking online courses gives me the opportunity to learn about things we probably would not cover in class,” senior Brennon Shanks said.

For some seniors with open bells, they have taken advantage of this online resource. Instead of taking a study hall or early dismissal, they have chosen to study through the EdX courses under the guidance of AP Chemistry teacher Michael Geyer.

  “In the independent study bell, Geyer basically supervises my online course on Organic Chemistry. I think it is awesome that our school gives us such flexibility,” senior Samantha Ciricillo said.

  However, there is a controversy associated the with the idea of taking courses online. Some of its cons are that it had a limited instructor and social interaction and that it eliminates the opportunity for networking and group study.

On the other hand, since the EdX courses are guided with a teacher, students are receiving this interaction. In addition, for those who are opposed to the idea of taking courses online, they should also keep in mind that for students who wish to go beyond the courses offered websites like EdX gives them this opportunity.

With the extent of knowledge provided over the internet, there are no limits for the options of receiving an advanced education that SHS seems to have embraced.
