Gender equality is a buzzing topic around the world and in the community, especially at SHS. A new club, He for She is centered around discussing and taking action to fight for gender equality. The club is run by Eleanor Schmid, 12, and Drew Schneider, 12, and sponsored by Miss Meredith Blackmore.

“He for She is a gender equality initiative. It is to bring awareness to gender inequality in the world and brainstorm ideas on how we can solve them,” said Schneider.

The club is looking to make positive change through direct action and bring students together to make gender equality a reality in our school, community, and even the world.

“During club meetings, we have discussions and activities to provoke thinking about which inequalities exist and how we can take action to change mind sets and eventually reach equality,” said Schmid.

“A common misconception is that the club and the issues they discuss are just for girls, but this is not the case. The club is looking to get more boys involved and talking about these issues.

“Another great thing about He for She is that we try to get everyone involved: men and women. But we really want to focus on getting guys because this is our problem too. Lately feminism has become synonymous with man hate, and we want to break that misconception,” said Schneider.

Ultimately the club’s main goal falls under their motto: “Our mission is gender equality. Our stories make it matter. Our actions make it real.”
