On Sat. Feb. 11, SHS and Mason will be joining forces for one great cause.

The Lady Aves and Lady Comets will be competing in a basketball game supporting Live for Liz, which will take place at Mason Middle School. Tip off is set for 2pm.

Live for Liz will take place in memory of Liz Lothrop, a Mason graduate, and daughter of SHS math teacher Randy Lothrop. Liz passed away in May 2016 after battling cancer a second time.

The event has powerful meaning, as Liz played basketball at Mason High School.

Last year, SHS was involved in a similar events, such as Layups for Liz, Hoops for Hope and Lady Aves for Liz. Proceeds of all events went to Duke Brain Cancer Research, as the Lothrop’s wished.

“There was lots of energy in the room [at 2015’s Hoops for Hope], it was really exciting and fun,” said Isabel Ingle, 10.

T-shirts are now on sale at school for $8, and can be purchased in Mr. Lothrop’s room or at lunch.

“I like this year’s shirt, and also the gray Hoops for Hope one from 2015,” said Hannah Taylor, 10.

Both teams will be selling additional items at the event such as bracelets, raffle tickets, and t-shirts to raise money for childhood cancer research at Children’s Hospital.

“Liz always said ‘There’s got to be a better way’, and all of the funds raised are going towards finding a cure, or a better way,” said Lothrop.
