Winter sports head off to competitions

Aves athletics are heating up as the season slows down. The men’s swim team and wrestling team both have multiple individuals advancing to higher level competing in the next few days.

On Thurs., Feb. 22 and Fri., Feb. 23, athletes from the men’s swim team will be competing at the OHSAA Division 1 State Swim Championships in Canton, Ohio.

These individuals include freshman Erik Menchhofer, junior Noah Patterson, senior Luke Tenbarge, senior Stephen Fang, junior Sammy Risma, junior Elliott Carl, sophomore Carson Foster, and senior Alex Newberg.

The girls finished out their season by placing in third team and multiple honorable mentions. Senior Stephanie Hong, freshman Abby Perun, sophomore Grace Deng, and senior Jiin Woo received an honorable mention for their 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Sophomore Grace Deng, junior Elizabeth Van Den Brink, junior Anna Campbell, and sophomore Marissa Allen got third team for their 200 Yard Medley Relay. In addition, Campbell, Van De Brink, Perun, and Allen got third team for their 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Finally, Campbell got third team for her 100 Yard Freestyle.

The OHSAA Sectional Wrestling Tournament will be on Feb. 23 at 12:00 p.m. The wrestlers and wrestlerettes who will be participating in Sectionals this weekend include junior Jake Vayo-Smith, sophomore Izumi Harney, freshman Jacob Madden, sophomore Matthew Neal, senior Peter Henderson, senior Josh Haunert, freshman Mitch Reardon, senior J.D. Folz, junior Jaycob Reynolds, junior Ryan Draughn, junior Gabe David, sophomore Eddie Hartwig, junior Jarron Knaff, and sophomore Bear Thomas-Newbolt.

The Wrestlerettes coming along are freshman Emma Pletz, freshman Zenny Layne, freshman Kira Washington, sophomore Lindsey Stevens, and freshman Aubrey Killeen, who will be assisting the team for the duration of the competition.
