The Leaf, the official newsmagazine of Sycamore High School, serves as an educational tool in the training of student journalists to provide information and editorial leadership concerning school, national, and world issues, to provide a public forum for the exchange of ideas and viewpoints, and to give coverage to newsworthy events directly related to the diverse school population.
Although students work under the guidance of a professional faculty member, the content is ultimately determined by the student staff and should reflect all areas of student interest, including topics about which there may be dissent and controversy. Students can not publish material that is obscene, libelous, or will cause “a substantial disruption of the educational process.” Content that may stimulate heated debate or discussion is not included in this definition. Our publications are public forums; views represented in our publications do not represent the views of the Sycamore School District or the Sycamore High School administration.
In 2015, The Leaf‘s web team worked through the summer and fall to create SHSleaf.org(previously www.goaves.com). During the process, we aimed to create an online platform for our readership and staff to interact within on a daily basis. Now, users can access stories, multimedia, and blogs on a greater and more personal scale than ever before, as well as view past issues of The Leaf and exclusive content not published at the time.
