BOOKBANNING. We have all heard of the efforts to ban books sweeping the U.S. education system. Books such as “The Kite Runner”, “Maus”, and “To Kill a Mockingbird”—pillars of the U.S. education system, all of which depict grim and heartbreaking times in history, such as the Holocaust and the Jim Crow era—are being challenged in schools around the nation. And book banning, something that I thought only occurred in movies like “Footloose”, has only gotten closer and closer to Ohio.

IT’S ABOUT TIME. On March 15, the U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to make daylight savings time permanent starting in 2023. The act they decided upon is cheerfully dubbed The Sunshine Protection Act and means that the time we operate on during the summer months will be what we use all year long. If the House of Representatives ends up voting in favor of the bill, it is likely that we will soon be past tediously switching our clocks and will not have to give up those random extra hours of sleep.

NATIONAL RED CROSS MONTH. As some people may be aware, the month of March is known as Red Cross month. Especially in this time of uncertainty, every one of us should take the time to appreciate those who are constantly there to help us when we need it most, sometimes even risking their lives to ensure our safety.
Several types of medical professionals surround us in our daily lives. There are EMTs and first responders, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, veterinarians, and psychiatrists, just to name a few. Each and every day, our front-line workers ensure our safety and health and provide us with the help we need. However, as they have demonstrated during the pandemic, they can do a lot more than just that.

This year SHS Fashion for the Cure raised $59,000 dollars for The Dragonfly Foundation. All this money is in support of families whose kids are battling cancer. FFTC is an annual event that brings together our entire Sycamore community in appreciating the artistry and skill of its students, all while supporting a good cause. It is one of a kind and finds its way into peoples lives year after year. A week after the 2020 fashion show COVID-19 took hold and FFTC was unfortunately not able to be held in 2021. However, this setback only further motivated the committee, designers, volunteers, and others this year to work hard to come out with a bang for the 2022 show. So, that is exactly what happened.

Featured are some notable designers and their collections from the show on February 18, 2022.

SHORTCHANGED. Pictured above is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of 16 top-ranked private universities involved in a lawsuit accusing them of reducing financial aid awarded to students through a price-fixing cartel. The suit claims that for almost two decades, the colleges have overcharged thousands of students who were eligible for financial aid—an estimated 170,000 students, to be exact. The other 15 alleged schools are Brown, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, Northwestern, Notre Dame, the University of Pennsylvania, Rice, Vanderbilt, and Yale.

TORNADO. This weekend, four states were hit by one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history. As death tolls and numbers of people unaccounted for rise, meteorologists have speculated about the cause of this disaster at such an unusual time in the year as well as the sheer magnitude of the tornadoes.
