ADDICTED. As High School Students, we are constantly moving; constantly doing homework, working, studying, and participating in extracurriculars. We hardly have time to relax, much less get a full nine hours of sleep. To keep up with our busy schedules and sleep deprivation, most of us turn to caffeine. Whether its a coffee on the way to school, a monster at lunch, or a soda after school, caffeine is a part of a majority of teens diets.
According to the National Sleep Foundation teens (14-17) need 8-10 hours of sleep and young adults (18-25) need 7-9 hours of sleep. Shockingly, a 2018 study revealed that only 27% of teens are meeting this criterion (AAP News). This overwhelming loss of sleep and exhaustion is probably what leads most teens to make their first cup of coffee.
Caffeine addiction is the reliance on caffeine and is common among teens and young adults. Caffeine addictions can be subtle and you may not even realize if you have one. Furthermore, a reliance on caffeinated beverages may not seem all that awful but it can lead to many unwanted symptoms and health effects.

To Gaby Pereda,12, the front door of her household provides a sturdy barrier between the two divisive aspects of her identity. On one side, Spanish is spoken to preserve her Venezuelan roots, yet on the other, the Spanish language rolls off her tongue as she steps into an English-speaking community. In her most recent article, Pereda elaborates on some of the hardships Latinx parents have faced when it comes to deciding whether or not to teach their children Spanish. In addition, she reflects on why she believes she would not be the person she is today without her ability to speak Spanish and English fluently.

SPOTIFY WRAPPED 2020 IS HERE. Spotify wrapped has come out again with it’s annual reports and everyone is fascinated by it once again. There are not many things cooler than seeing a customized playlist and stats about what music you have listened to over the year, But what makes it so cool? Is it the music itself? Is it because you can show off your top songs and artists? Well the answer is it’s a little of both. We asked SHS students what they thought of their wraps to find out more.

CHOICE IS YOURS. With decades of linear storytelling ending in only one result, what if we were able to decide how the story went. As video games are seeming to take more and more from the cinematic playbook, the opposite appears to have happened. This now allows viewers to make essential and impactful decisions in the movies/television they watch, allowing them to have a unique experience compared to other viewers.

BEING LEFT ON HEARD. We have all been there. The awkward silence. The hectic glancing around the room to avoid eye contact. The anxiety to be the first one to unmute rushing into your body. Although we can all agree that remote learning is certainly not the most ideal platform for school, it is important that we do all that we can to get the most out of it.
