PICK A TREAT. TIP students are involved in making dog treats at EarthWise Pet. There is a stand dedicated to these specific treats in the Harper’s Point store. The bag also includes the individual’s name who worked on that bag of treats, which gives it a nice personal touch.

HALLOWEEN FUN. The TIP house celebrated Halloween last October. TIP helps students grow and develop skills they need in the community and beyond. Members contribute in many ways to the community.

DOCTOR. Horrigan does not have autism, but he does work with children who have ASD. As a psychiatrist, he helps treatment programs to address the child’s individual needs. Horrigan’s perspective is influenced by his background in developing and testing pediatric drugs with GlaxoSmithKline.

PLAN IT. Dr. Temple Grandin’s designs for livestock facilities are used throughout the world. In 2017, Grandin was inducted in the National Women’s Hall of Fame for her work in education, science, and humanities. “You see, autism is an important part of who I am, and I wouldn’t want to change a thing and get cured,” Grandin said, according to “LA Times.”

EXPRESS YOURSELF. Miller makes sketches, but she also makes clay art. One thing she makes out of clay are masks that show different emotions. One mask she created was to represent how one feels after hours of crying- she etched tears into her mask. She said that it is as if the tears scar her face.

BE WHO YOU ARE. John Elder Robison attends an event for one of his books. Robison’s four novels are titled “Switched On,” “Raising Cubby,” “Be Different,” and “Look Me in the Eye.” Freshman English students may opt to read “Look Me in the Eye” for the memoir unit of their course. Published in 2007, the sometimes humorous, often meditative, and undeniably memorable memoir continues to be a favorite among SHS freshmen.
