NO TOLERANCE. Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Mitt Romney were outraged by King’s comments and supported his removal from committees. The action taken against King stands in contrast to the tolerance towards the president’s inflammatory statements. I’m glad that they are finally taking action after all of these years of Steve King slandering immigrants and Hispanics, but the president of the United States is also doing that and he just said something about Elizabeth Warren a few evenings ago that was also racially ugly and we haven’t heard a word of condemnation from anyone in the Republican Party about that,” said Texas representative Joaquin Castro to the Times.

FIGHT. With the transition of the new legislators coming into office soon approaching, many believe the new “stand your ground” bill to be a last-ditch effort by the heavily conservative Ohio legislature. Many are following the status of the legislation even after Gov. Kasich publicly opposed it as it follows the path to becoming a real bill. “I think there should be stricter gun laws and regulation in regards to background checks so we can make sure that guns that we think are in the right hands remain in the right hands,” said Sarah Dierker, 12.

KEEP A TALLY. Senior Theodore Weng snaps this photo during the watch party for Aftab Pureval. Though Pureval lost the seat to incumbent Republican Steve Chabot, the first district includes parts of Hamilton and Warren County, tilting the district red. “I think its unlikely for a Democratic candidate to win the first district until 2022 when gerrymandering is supposed to be fixed. Aside from that, I do think Aftab did a good job rallying the Democrats in Hamilton County,” Weng said.
