CHANGE. On Feb. 19, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas organized a lie-in in front of the White House. The group, Teens for Gun Reform, was surrounded by supporters with signs. Despite the President not being present, it was a major event asking lawmakers to pass stricter gun control laws.

LISTEN UP. SHS students are required to take half a credit of health in order to graduate. The SHS class whose curriculum was described is the semester-long class titled “Health.” The SHS course planner describes it as “a study and application course that equips students to practice wise decision making skills.” Many veterans of Health remember scoffing at and/or ignoring some, much, or all of the teachings of the Sex Education unit.

On Jan. 24, they went on the field trip to note any possible areas which they can improve to make the center greener, as they will detail in a written essay. The essay is the first portion of the competition the team must complete.

SHARING EXPERIENCES. Seniors speak about their high school experiences and give advice to current seventh and eighth graders along with their parents at the 14th annual Student to Student Forum, which was held at the Junior High on Jan. 22. Most of the event was in Q&A format, with questions on topics ranging from activities and clubs to time management and sleep habits. At the end of the session, some parents and students could come up and ask more individualized questions.

Seniors in AP English Literature and Composition are currently in the middle of reading William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet.” They are analyzing the role of revenge in the play as well as the development of Hamlet and the characterization of women. “The kids seem to enjoy and get a lot from the play. As a teacher, there are lots of elements for me to work with; I can play movie adaptations, have the kids make videos and enact the play, and much more,” said Mr. Tom Gaffigan, AP Literature teacher.
