The Queen’s Gambit: a common chess opening involving the white player sacrificing a Queen-side pawn to secure control of the center of the board; an attacking move. Or, in the case of this review, a well-edited, intense Netflix miniseries with impressive acting and overarching themes that’s worth watching.

On March 8th, dancers from Cincy Dance Studio were packed backstage at a dance competition surrounded by hundreds of people from all over the country. Music was blasting, people were cheering as they had the time of their lives. Little did they know their beloved dance studio was five days away from shutting down for months due to the Coronavirus. Lauren Andrews, owner of the studio, said, “I do think our industry will be impacted for the foreseeable future. And it’s up to us to ensure our dancers that they still have a safe environment for them to attend.”

The Show Must Go On

Ella Schulte, Staff Writer November 20, 2020

Ever since I was 3-years-old, dance has been my world. There are a million reasons that led me to love it. The music, the glam, the exercise- the list goes on and on. But above all, one thing has always...

LIVE FROM YOUR LIVING ROOM. During the COVID-19 pandemic, live events have come to a halt, putting concerts, Broadway shows, and other productions on hold. Luckily, many artists and performers have found ways to hold performances virtually, such as former One Direction member Niall Horan, who held a live-streamed concert on Nov. 7 from Royal Albert Hall in London. Despite my skepticism of the idea of paying to watch a performance from my living room, I tuned into the live stream anyways, and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. From the stunning venue to Horan’s fantastic vocals, it was definitely a concert I will remember.

#NOTAWITCH. The new movie “The Witches,” an adaption of Roald Dahl’s novel, has been receiving backlash for its negative depiction of limb differences. The film stars Anne Hathaway, whose witch character is made to look scarier because of her three-fingered hands, creating a negative view of this real limb difference. Members of the disability community have taken to posting photos of their difference with #notawitch to combat this narrative. “My hope is that kids with or without limb differences seeing this movie won’t associate people with limb differences with ugly, mean witches,” said Rachel Sumrada, a high school senior and amputee from Cleveland, Ohio.

What does a witch look like? Someone with green skin? A pointy hat? The new film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Witches,”  sparked a backlash over its interpretation of that question. Released...

HOW TO HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR. The holidays are now fast approaching and COVID-19 is still affecting every part of our life. Halloween is a time for candy, costumes, and celebrating, but can it still occur this year? Health officials recently released a list of guidelines and suggestions to help Ohio have a healthy Halloween. This Halloween everyone should be wearing their protective face masks, even if also wearing a costume mask, and should continue to be socially distant. While this should continue like always, the state offered some unique suggestions to celebrate the holiday safely. Some of these ideas include, holding a drive thru trick-or-treat, having a pumpkin carving contest over video call, and leaving treats in the mailboxes of friends and neighbors. Though our world has never been more different, Halloween should still be a time of celebration. Stay Safe!

STUCK WITH STREAMING SERVICES. Amidst the pandemic, many have indulged their entertainment needs with at-home services, such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. Although we all enjoy the comfort of our own home, it just can’t be compared to the sound, quality, and thrill of seeing a movie on the big screen. “Some movies are just made to be watched in a cinema,” said Emilio Garcia, 12.

With so many options and new drinks coming out each season, the menu can easily look overwhelming. But don’t worry! This easy to read info graphic gives you some ideas for what to order next time you are in line at Starbucks. Four fall fashion trends for 2020

Lindsay Ruskin, Design Editor October 6, 2020

WHAT TO DO. Oftentimes after long weeks of school, we crave some sense of fun during the weekend. Yet oftentimes, living in a suburb, we feel like there’s nothing left to do that we haven’t already tried before. Therefore, I created a guide with fun activities to do this fall, winter, and a few activities that don’t abide by the seasons. If you want to challenge yourself, try and complete all the activities before the end of 2020.

Running out of ideas of what to do with your friends?

BOOKS VERSUS MOVIES. While there may never be a true winner to the everlasting battle between the craft of an author’s paper and pencil or the moving artistry of a director’s camera and editing, you can decide for yourself with these ten titles. Whether you are looking for teen romance or a gripping adventure, this list has you covered. And maybe, just maybe, you can determine if the novel or film comes out on top.

Book or movie?
