It’s Time: 2022 Gift Guide

Gurnoor Makkad, Broadcast Editor December 5, 2022

It’s that time of year again. The time for holiday cheer, breaking out the old decorations you have buried somewhere in your basement, and sitting in front of the television binge-watching cheesy Christmas...

Bagels!

Bagels. Delicious doughy spheres that have been around since the 17th century. While they have a surprisingly debated origin, bagels were most likely first developed in Karkow, Poland by Jewish people....

The Nightmare Before Christmas? Or Halloween?

Claire Dillon October 14, 2022

Halloween is fast approaching, and with this beloved holiday comes beloved movies. Whether you like horror movies, Disney Channel Monstober throwbacks, or even Hallmark’s fall flicks, there’s...

Diwali is a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It is the festival of light celebrated with fireworks, lamps, and sparklers.

The History of Homecoming Queen

Riley Johnson, Staff Writer September 27, 2022

Celebration, parade, joy and excitement are words long associated with the homecoming celebration. Along with these words has also come a stereotypical and often harmful view of what homecoming court represents....

BOOKBANNING. We have all heard of the efforts to ban books sweeping the U.S. education system. Books such as “The Kite Runner”, “Maus”, and “To Kill a Mockingbird”—pillars of the U.S. education system, all of which depict grim and heartbreaking times in history, such as the Holocaust and the Jim Crow era—are being challenged in schools around the nation. And book banning, something that I thought only occurred in movies like “Footloose”, has only gotten closer and closer to Ohio.

IT’S ABOUT TIME. On March 15, the U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to make daylight savings time permanent starting in 2023. The act they decided upon is cheerfully dubbed The Sunshine Protection Act and means that the time we operate on during the summer months will be what we use all year long. If the House of Representatives ends up voting in favor of the bill, it is likely that we will soon be past tediously switching our clocks and will not have to give up those random extra hours of sleep.

WOMENS HISTORY MONTH. With its humble beginnings as an obligatory declaration by Jimmy Carter in 1981, Women’s History Month originally began as Women’s History Week. Only in 1995 was it determined that women and their achievements would be recognized for the entire month of March, not just what had been seven days during a 365 day year.

NATIONAL RED CROSS MONTH. As some people may be aware, the month of March is known as Red Cross month. Especially in this time of uncertainty, every one of us should take the time to appreciate those who are constantly there to help us when we need it most, sometimes even risking their lives to ensure our safety.
Several types of medical professionals surround us in our daily lives. There are EMTs and first responders, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, veterinarians, and psychiatrists, just to name a few. Each and every day, our front-line workers ensure our safety and health and provide us with the help we need. However, as they have demonstrated during the pandemic, they can do a lot more than just that.

National Red Cross Month

Gurnoor Makkad, Staff Writer March 24, 2022

Think about all the times you have fallen and hurt yourself. If it was severe enough, you may have even gone to the emergency room. Along the way, you might have encountered several nurses, doctors, and...

This year SHS Fashion for the Cure raised $59,000 dollars for The Dragonfly Foundation. All this money is in support of families whose kids are battling cancer. FFTC is an annual event that brings together our entire Sycamore community in appreciating the artistry and skill of its students, all while supporting a good cause. It is one of a kind and finds its way into peoples lives year after year. A week after the 2020 fashion show COVID-19 took hold and FFTC was unfortunately not able to be held in 2021. However, this setback only further motivated the committee, designers, volunteers, and others this year to work hard to come out with a bang for the 2022 show. So, that is exactly what happened.

Featured are some notable designers and their collections from the show on February 18, 2022.
