One of the biggest events in the music industry just took place on February 2: The Grammys. As always, they were filled with drama and incredibly entertaining to watch.
They started as usual with all the celebrities showcasing their outfits. Many pulled up in elaborate dresses; Taylor Swift was wearing a sparkly red dress, Sabrina Carpenter a baby blue feathery one, and Gracie Abrams was dressed in Chanel. There were many more eccentric dresses as well. One riskier outfit was a sheer dress worn by Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s new wife.
Trevor Noah hosted the evening like he has been doing since 2021. The event was a fundraiser to help those affected by the California wildfires. Those at the Grammys were asked to make donations, with local firefighters speaking on stage and even presenting an award.
There were a lot of highlights; it started when Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” won Best Pop Vocal Album followed by the Best Pop Solo Performance, earning her first two Grammys ever. Charlie XCX won three Grammys for her album “Brat” which had immense success on TikTok. Chappell Roan emerged as the official Best New Artist and took time in her acceptance speech to call out record labels. Shakira won the award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Among the only-male artists that were nominated for Best Rap Album, Doechii left as the winner and Beyonce was awarded Best Country Album. Not to mention Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, who won Best Pop Duo Performance with their song “Die With A Smile.” Of course, there were many more Grammys won by incredible artists across all genres, a lot of them awarded before the actual livestream. Everyone delivered heartfelt speeches, some addressing real-world/current world issues and all of them touched by their wins.
To the surprise and dismay of their fans, both Billie Eilish and Swift left the show empty-handed. Both have had an incredibly successful year with their respective albums “Hit Me Hard And Soft” and “The Tortured Poets Department” topping the charts. Still, Eilish and Swift both gracefully accepted their defeats.
The Grammys would not be the Grammys without some stunning performances. We saw The Weeknd make his surprising return with an incredible performance after his boycott. Carpenter sang two of her hit songs and Benson Boone performed his signature backflip. Eilish sang “Birds Of A Feather” with her brother Finneas and Charlie XCX played a mashup of her songs “Van Dutch” and “Guess.” Doechii performed two of her songs as well. A tribute was played to Quincy Jones by multiple artists, with Janelle Monae performing Michael Jackson’s famous moonwalk, To top it all off, Lady Gaga released a new single and Shakira made a come-back at the Grammys after a years-long hiatus.
It is hard to say who left this event as the biggest winner. Was it Beyonce, whose “Cowboy Carter” was controversially awarded Album of the Year after many years of waiting? Was it Kendrick Lamar, who won five different Grammys—among them Record of the Year— for his song “Not Like Us,” a song that took a jab at Drake after their feud last year?
Whether each artist deserved their wins or not is subjective, but the evening was nothing short of eventful and fun to watch. No matter the outcome, a lot of powerful contenders showcased their immense talent and put on an award show for the ages.
