SHS has various opportunities to encourage students to get involved with environmental sciences outside of school. The Biology Club and Environmental Club are two exceptional ways to engage in a community of students who share an interest in science and nature.
Biology Club
Biology Club allows high school students to explore fascinating topics in a collaborative setting every other Wednesday. “The main goal is to engage [students from] all grades and learn biology together,” said Tanuja Venu, 10, president of Biology Club. “We start off where everyone comes and we settle down, eat snacks, talk to friends, and then there would be time to experiment with the subjects.” Biology Club looks forward to “turtle tracking” which allows members to engage in tracking turtles around SHS. The club anticipates continuing this activity later in the year.
Environmental Club
Additionally, Environmental Club meets every Thursday and is a place where students can engage in hands-on projects in the community. “Environmental Club is responsible for collecting recycling from the classrooms,” Mr. Ron Hochstrasser, the advisor of the club, said. Furthermore, the club participates in “maintaining the pollinator garden, exploring environmental science opportunities, and experiencing environmental events such as canoeing, overnight camp, and hiking.”
Both Biology Club and Environmental Club allow students to explore their interest in science outside of a typical classroom setting while creating an environment where peers can learn and collaborate.
