“Mamma Mia” is one of the most well-loved films of our generation. Adapted as a musical in 1999, the production quickly won the hearts of the general public, becoming a highly successful and lasting show on Broadway.
On April 24-26, Aves Theatre presented “Mamma Mia” on the auditorium stage through lively choreography, complex scenery and sets, and an outstanding ensemble of actors. The Leaf staff asked Emery Hines, 12, and Clarissa Ramirez, 12, about the show.
Emory Hines, 12
Q: What has been the most challenging part of performing in “Mamma Mia”?
A: I think the most challenging part for me was going to voice lessons and really trying to change my technique and learn the proper placement for each song.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing Sophie in the show?
A: My favorite part about playing Sophie is how energetic and fun the character is and how every song is catchy.
Clarissa Ramirez, 12
Q: What is your favorite number to perform?
A: My favorite numbers to perform are “Mamma Mia” and “The Winner Takes it All.” They both show Donna battling her emotions but in different scenarios; there’s something so beautiful about the vulnerability that she shows in both pieces.
Q: What’s a rehearsal memory specific to “Mamma Mia” that you’ll never forget?
A: My favorite rehearsal memory is when we first sat down and read through the show. I was in a space with all my closest friends and we had so much fun. I also loved any of our Saturday rehearsals when I got to spend time with my friends.
