This winter, SHS sent six teams to compete at the state level, proudly representing the talent and dedication of the aviators. The Leaf compiled a recap of the SHS swimming, diving, winter track, wrestling, DECA, and Latin teams’ achievements.
Swim & Dive:
The Aviators had an extremely successful swimming and diving season. Notably, individual athletes Eleanor Hardy, 11, Chloe Fox, 10, and Vivian Niu, 12 placed in the finals, finishing in seventh, both 13th and seventh in distinct events, and 15th place respectively. Additionally, the Lady Aves 400 Free Relay Team of Hardy, Fox, Jordyn Langford, 10, and Sophia Swejkar, 10, finished in seventh place. Finally, the Girls 200 Medley Relay Team of Niu, Hardy, Langford, and Sarah Finn, 11, placed 10th, while the Boys 200 Medley Relay Team of Chase Muszynski, 10, John Knapschaefer, 11, Collin Preissler, 12, and Parker Schnelle, 12, placed 13th.
Moreover, at the OHSAA State Diving Championships, sophomore Oliver Erck from the SHS diving team finished in fifth place. All Aviators on the swimming and diving teams performed exceptionally and exhibited excellence at states.
Winter Track:
The Sycamore Winter Track team sent 22 state qualifiers to Geneva, OH, doubling the amount of athletes sent last year. Eshaal Pasha, 12, came in fourth place in Shotput as her first year competing at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC) State Indoor Track Meet! Furthermore, competing in triple jump, junior Bryson Hissong placed fifth, and the Girls 4×400 Relay placed eighth.
DECA:
In February, 123 Sycamore students competed at The DECA Ohio State Career Development Conference (CDC) in Columbus, Ohio. Students from all across Ohio participate in a rigorous 100 question test, following a roleplay taking the position of a business role. Students explore careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management preparing them for college. Many SHS students advanced to the second round, with 40 students qualifying for the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Latin:
With over 500 students from across Ohio competing, our Sycamore Latin Intermediate Certamen Team brought home a first place title at the 75th Annual OJCL Convention in Columbus. Dash Finkin, 9, Emmy Hayes, 9, Grace Weinewuth, 9, and Rihaan Priyasurya, 9, competed along with 500 students from across Ohio. This competition involves various tests, graphic arts, and creative arts focused on the Greco-Roman world, and the SHS Latin team dominated the event and brought home a distinguished title.
