Sycamore trees are some of the biggest and most recognizable trees in North America. There are 10 different types, the most common being the American Sycamore. These trees can grow more than 100 feet tall and develop extremely wide trunks, making them one of the largest hardwood trees on the continent.
One unique thing about a Sycamore tree is its bark, which naturally peels off in patches throughout the year, revealing lighter colors underneath like white, gray, and green. This gives the tree its recognizable camouflage-like pattern.
Sycamore trees are most commonly found near rivers, streams, and wetlands because they need a lot of water to grow. In the fall and winter, sycamore trees produce round seed balls that hang from the branches. These eventually break apart and spread seeds that can grow into new trees.
Some Sycamores can survive for hundreds of years. Many old Sycamore trees become landmarks in parks, forests, and towns because of their unique appearance. With their towering height, strong roots, and important role in nature, Sycamore trees are one of the most formidable trees in the world.
