During the colder months, it is common to feel isolated and to feel like there is nowhere to go or nothing to do. Even though the cold restricts our ability to partake in our usual activities, it also opens up so many new opportunities for fun that we normally would not have otherwise. So, rather than spending your winter inside, enjoy the festivities that it brings to us. You can start by doing any of these four things.
1. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden’s Festival of Lights
Ending on January 5, 2025, the Cincinnati Zoo hosts the 42nd PNC Festival of Lights. Whether you are going for the Instagram pictures or the experience, the Festival of Lights will continue to be one of my top winter activities year after year. Along with the four million LED lights decorating the zoo, there are 5 hidden Fiona fairies that you can find in Fairyland, magical lights on Swan Lake, and amazing hot chocolate and seasonal snacks at the concessions. Going to the Festival of Lights each year has become a tradition for me, and it has been worth the visit every time. I recommend going early to see the animals during the daytime, which, as a bonus, helps you skip the traffic!
2. Ice Skating
Ice skating will forever be a classic winter activity, so not knowing how to skate should never be an excuse for skipping out on some fun—especially when there are so many places to ice skate in Cincinnati. Starting local, Summit Park’s ice rink also closes on January 5th, so go while you can! They also supply skates, so no need to worry if you do not have any. But if you are looking for something a little more “movie-like”, you can go ice skating in Fountain Square. I mean, who needs New York when we have our very own UC Health Ice Rink? Closing on February 19th, this ice rink has available rental skates and full-service concessions.
3. Christmas Lights Tour
One of the biggest Christmas Traditions is the lights. Luckily for us, we have or know people with cars. You can drive around your neighborhood or other neighborhoods and see the beautiful lights strung through our city. And the best part is…it is free!!
4. Build a snowman
Nothing says winter fun like going out in your yard and building a snowman. Embrace the cold this winter through this timeless tradition. Building a snowman is the perfect way to connect to your childhood memories and enjoy the snow while also having fun with your friends and family. As a plus, you get to have a festive winter decoration in your back or front yard, even if it does not last forever. So why not make the most of the snow when it comes?
