Welcome to the first edition of the Week in Review! The Week in Review aims to provide an unbiased overview of the most important and relevant news, as well as some fun history facts. Hope you enjoy!
Government and Politics:
- On Monday, President Donald Trump was inaugurated. This will be his second term in office.
- One of President Trump’s first acts in office was pardoning all but 14 people convicted of January 6 riot offenses, amounting to over 1,500 people. The 14 not pardoned had their sentences commuted to time served.
- On Tuesday, convicted US Capitol rioter Pamela Hemphill turned down Trump’s pardon, accepting her wrongdoing in the January 6 insurrection.
- On Friday, another January 6 rioter followed suit and turned down Trump’s pardon.
- On Monday, President Trump also withdrew from the World Health Organization and Paris climate accords, repealed dozens of former President Joe Biden‘s executive actions, including protections for transgender people, and signed an executive order to keep Tiktok operating for 75 days. He even signed an executive order that renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
- President Trump also changed the name and expanded the powers of The Digital Service, which was created by Former President Barack Obama in 2014 to “modernize the government’s approach to technology.” The revamped Department—now named the Department of Government Efficiency—will now “provide advice and guidance from outside of government.”
- On Tuesday, President Trump signed an executive order that allows ICE to detain suspected illegal immigrants at churches and schools.
- On Sunday, the Trump administration launched an immigration enforcement offensive nationwide, arresting nearly 1,000 people.
- A flurry of cabinet members have been confirmed this week as well. Marco Rubio was confirmed as Secretary of State; John Ratcliff as CIA Director; Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary; and Kristi Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Sports News:
- On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 23-55 in the NFC Championship Game for the Super Bowl.
- On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 29-32 in the AFC Championship Game for the Super Bowl.
Local News:
- This week, the Clermont County Jail introduced its first K9 officer, a drug-sniffing dog named Deborah.
- On Tuesday, Texas Tech defeated the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team, 81-71.
- On Wednesday, the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team fell to the Arizona Wildcats.
This Week in History:
- Monday, January 20 was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and celebrates the day Martin Luther King Jr. was born. Although he was born on January 15, 1929, his birth is celebrated every year on the third Monday in January.
- Tuesday, January 21 was the day Stonewall Jackson, the Confederate General who is considered one of the most gifted tactical commanders in military history, was born in 1824.
- Wednesday, January 22 was the day the US entered World War I in 1917.
- Thursday, January 23 was the day the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted its first members in 1986.
- Friday, January 24 was the day Claudius succeeded his uncle, Caligula, to become the fourth Roman Emperor.
- Saturday, January 25 was the day the first Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924.
- Sunday, January 26 was the day India officially became a republic in 1950.
