Walter “Scott” Telford IV, 11, is an SHS student who is an inspiration to many equally well-rounded peers. He has poured effort into his academic career while managing a prosperous tennis record, a passion for personal fitness, and meaningful relationships with those around him. Of all his classes, Telford enjoys statistics, but has an even higher affection for physics. “Physics is interesting to me because it impacts our lives not only on small scales in everyday life, but also in more grand ways,” he explained.
Telford started playing tennis in fifth grade, and the sport continues to shape his work ethic. “Tennis has inspired me to work hard and I like the high pressure moments,” he stated, noting his appreciation for its independence: “you can only rely on yourself in a match,” he added. Telford applies himself in personal exercise too; he said, “I enjoy going to the gym because I’m able to track my progression.” He also challenges his brain at the card table by playing poker.
Telford’s uniqueness extends beyond his pastimes; he has always had a fondness for Nutella. “I’ve loved Nutella since I first had it ten years ago. I love all chocolate but especially Nutella,” he clarified. Telford consumes record amounts of Nutella, at least a jar per week.
Telford plans to study at Northwestern or Duke University. “I intend to pursue a doctorate in astrophysics or condensed matter physics,” he said. For long term career goals, Telford aspires to be involved in academia and research.
