The Leaf staff had the chance to interview SHS teachers on how they prepare for the incoming week. Here are some teachers’ Sundays before the school week starts:
Teacher Sunday
Mr. Kerry Crotty (English)
Mr. Crotty prepares his week depending on what he is teaching or the time of year. During content heavy times, he focuses on pacing out lessons throughout the week, and mostly does this on Fridays. “I start every Monday morning with writing, so I know we are always going to do that first,” Mr. Crotty said, ensuring a calm way to start the week for his students. Mr. Crotty plans out whether to come to school early or not, either preparing lessons or working out in the Gregory Center. “When I was a new teacher I would get so nervous on Sunday nights, but since I have been teaching for years I am okay. I don’t like feeling nervous,” he said.
Ms. Lisa Vanags (Spanish)
Ms. Vanags spends her Sunday morning and afternoon doing chores around the house, like laundry, cleaning, and grocery shopping. Sunday night is reserved for creating lesson plans and making sure everything is set for the rest of the week on the weekly slideshow. She also makes sure Sunday is a day to spend time with family.
Ms. Kimberly Cooper (Science)
Ms. Cooper prepares with a massive to-do list. “I try not to overwhelm myself by thinking about the whole week, I just think, ‘let’s just get through Monday,” she said. She keeps two lists: one for work and one for personal things to get done. “I like to keep them separate instead of the same list because that can be daunting,” added Ms. Cooper. Ms. Cooper prioritizes the things she absolutely has to get done at the top of the list, and the things that would be “nice to get done” at the bottom. “I love the satisfaction of checking things off one by one throughout the week,” she said.
