Learning how to cook cook goes way deeper than just making meals. At SHS, students who take this semester-long elective also learn responsibility, independence, and confidence.
Located in room 1309, Cooking I is available to students starting in 10th grade and requires no prerequisite. It focuses on teaching the fundamentals of cooking, baking, and other essential kitchen knowledge. Students will also learn about food-safety and sanitation, how to read a recipe, and nutrition. By the end of the semester, students will have a variety of cooking and baking skills that will be applicable throughout their lives.
Once students have completed Cooking I, they have the option to move on to Cooking II, where they will learn how to perform more advanced techniques, including improving knife skills, how to make grocery lists, to experiment with ingredient substitutions, and plating. Students most look forward to preparing starters, breakfasts, entrees, and desserts. At SHS, there are two teachers who teach cooking: Mrs. Sarah Chapman teaches Cooking l and Mrs. Allison Timmers teaches Cooking ll. Chapman has been teaching cooking classes since she graduated from college in 2012 and said her favorite part of teaching the class is “hearing students use the skills outside of the classroom.” Although there is a fee for both courses to cover consumable ingredients during class, many students say it is well worth it. Cooking calls attention to all students who are looking for life skills, independence, and lots of fun.
Overall, cooking at SHS is not just about following recipes; . Cooking is about preparing students for life beyond high school.
