Have you ever wondered where your recycling goes? Well, you can look no further than SHS’s own Environmental Club, led by Emily Ploscowe, 12. Every Thursday, the club goes to each classroom and picks up their recycling in an effort to help the environment and ensure that SHS’s waste gets recycled. The club also has special events to celebrate Earth Day or before winter break, where they decorate bird houses and bring in food.
Ploscowe joined the club during her sophomore year after taking AP Environmental Science and became very involved after that. She, like many other club members, also participates in Envirothon, a science-based competition. At Envirothon, there are five different categories to compete in: forestry, wildlife, soil, current events, and aquatics. Participants take tests over those categories, and then each team is ranked.
Joining Environmental Club, Ploscowe said, allows students to learn “how they impact the environment around them.” Members get to “see how they impact the community, and how the work we do helps the janitors, helps the school recycle,” and ends up helping the whole community.
Ploscowe’s favorite part of the club is the people. “I get to hang out with my friends and talk while helping the planet and recycling,” she said. If you are interested in joining the club, be sure to join the Remind, @ecoaves, and start making a difference in the SHS environment every Thursday.
