For any other student at SHS, the bell ringing at 2:20 means the day has come to an end. This is not the case for the girls’ lacrosse team though. Games are normally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which means it is woven into the school week for the players. So what exactly would a Tuesday practice look like for one of these girls? Ellie Johnson, 12, gives insight on how she handles the busy schedule that comes with this team.
2:20 p.m. – The school day is over and the girls go home to have a little prep and rest time before practice.
4:30 p.m. – Johnson arrives at SHS 30 minutes early with her teammates to change, get equipment ready, and start stretching. This punctuality allows the girls to have two hours set for their practice to work hard and seek guidance from their coaches.
5 p.m. – The coaches arrive and the team immediately jumps into drills, conditioning, and scrimmaging. The practices are often very physically demanding, but it is all to help the girls achieve their goals within the sport.
7 p.m. – Practice is technically over, although sometimes it tends to go a little bit overtime. Johnson heads home to have dinner and shower before jumping back into the student mindset to knock out her homework.
Not only are there multiple practices throughout the school week, but there are also often game days. Johnson said having these physically and mentally tasking games throughout the week “makes school a lot harder because I’m a lot more physically tired the following day and the days seem a lot longer.”
