Broadcast Club is a new in-school club as of last year. Students in the club work each week during Aves Bell to write scripts, record, and edit the announcement videos, which they share with students on Monday mornings.
Mondays are when the pitch meetings for the following week’s announcements take place. Club members look through the district calendar and athletic calendar and think of clubs and students to highlight during that week’s announcements.
Producers Sam Broxterman, 11, and Gianna Pawlick, 12, run the story meetings, taking notes of options to include. They focus on timeliness and what might apply to the widest audience when debating what should be included.
After the stories are decided, script writer Emma Garcia, 12, organizes the stories into a two-anchor script. When filming on Thursdays, the script is played on the teleprompter for the anchors to read off while filming the segment.
Simultaneously, the two tech members are behind the scenes operating the camera and editing the videos once they are filmed. The editing process takes around two days to piece together the introduction, anchor clips, and outside interviews.
Broadcast club is an amazing opportunity for students to learn new and diverse skill sets as well as try something new outside of their comfort zone.
