As exam season quickly approaches, studying becomes a top priority for many SHS students. Between tests, projects, and numerous different assignments, it is hard to find the best time for exam study sessions. Creating a study plan that works for all the learning styles, along with using effective memorization techniques, can make a difference during the exams. To help students prepare for AP exams or even final exams, here are several tips to make studying more effective and less stressful.
TIP #1: SLEEP WELL
Deciding to pull an all-nighter to study might seem like a great idea, but it does more harm than good in the long run. Lack of sleep can make it harder to focus and remember the content studied the night before. Getting seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep improves your memory and learning.
TIP #2: START STUDYING EARLY
As soon as students hear the word “exam” in the classroom, immediate stress flows through their bodies. If you have this feeling, rather than freaking out, make a schedule for when you are going to study—and actually stick to that. More time, can allow 1-on-1 time with teachers and the information is comprehended better.
TIP #3: CHANGE YOUR SCENERY
Learning environments play a big part in successful studying. Staying in the same place for too long leads to distraction, making studying challenging. Techniques like the method of loci show how connecting information to different places can improve memory. Moving to a different location ever so often can help students refocus and continue studying.
TIP #4: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Trusting yourself is something people struggle with. When students doubt their strengths, it can cause them to second guess themselves. Staying confident during the exam and believing in what you studied can help you control your stress and think more realistically.
TIP #5: EAT WELL BEFORE EXAMS
Going into an exam on an empty stomach makes it harder to focus and stay energized. Having low energy weakens the brain’s cognitive control and executive functions, reducing the ability to sustain attention and ignore irrelevant stimuli. A proper breakfast will help focus during the exam.
