Double victory for Lady Aves tennis
September 30, 2014
The Lady Aves tennis team experienced their most successful days of the season last weekend. On Sat. Sept. 27, The Varsity A team won the GMC (Greater Miami Conference) tournament and the B team won the Sycamore Cup tournament.
Trying to come back from a tough state team loss to Ursuline Academy, the A team dominated the GMC tournament.
First singles player, junior Alexa Abele, lost early but her teammates were able to step up despite her loss. Both second and third singles players (junior Margaret Skwara, and freshman Leah Wallihan) won in the finals of their individual tournaments against Mason.
The first (senior Jamie Pescovitz and junior Caroline Gao) and second (senior Sneha Rajagopal and junior Brianna Dooley) doubles teams also won in their individual finals against Mason teams.
With these four victories, the Lady Aves were able to clinch the title.
Next up for the A team is individual postseason play. They will compete in Sectionals, Districts and State.
The Varsity B team won the Sycamore Cup doubles tournament, defeating teams like Ursuline and Mason, who also have B teams. Earlier in the season, they lost a close match to Mason 2-3, but managed to defeat them at the Sycamore Cup, as well as on Mon. Sept. 29, where they won 3-2.
