Applications amaze

Calculating your hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen disulfide, and methyl mercaptan levels by sticking a sensor in your mouth may sound like something you’d see in a sci-fi movie, but it is actually designed for a more everyday purpose: to measure how bad your breath is.
The Mint is a smartphone app that measures bad-breath causing compounds in your mouth. A user places the Mint sensor in his mouth and breathes onto it.
“I think this app is so creative, before a date or an interview or something I could measure my breath and see if I need a mint or something. It would definitely be useful. I’m curious and would try it out,” sophomore Joshua Glynn said.
It works similar to the way smartphone breathalyzers do: breathe into the device for a few seconds and the app rates your breath quality.
“I’m not sure I would want to be seen blowing into a device, then when people ask what I’m doing, replying ‘checking if my breath stinks’, that’s just weird,” sophomore Jake Borman said.
The iOS app syncs with:
- Apple’s HealthKit
- Android app
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5
- Nexus 5
The apps track your breath quality over time and allow you to compete with friends in leaderboards.
“I think it would be cool to compete with my friends see who has the best breath and who needs to actually buy some mouth wash, plus it would be a daily reminder to floss and brush my teeth well,” freshman Caroline Keeton said.
