GSTA readies class for ‘Day of Silence’
April 16, 2015
The Gay Straight Transgender Alliance Club has an annual agenda set into place. It is called the Day of Silence, sponsored by GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network), and they are preparing to take it to new heights.
On Apr. 17, those participating in the day’s festivities take a vow of silence to respect the silence of LGBTQIA+ individuals who face discrimination. Rules include no casual speech, but participants are required to speak up for class participation, so as not to disrupt the school day.
GSA Clubs all over the nation are preparing for the Day of Silence, including the one at SHS. Here, club members are selling stickers during lunch on Apr. 15 and offering a healthy treat alongside each purchase.
Members who attended the Cincinnati GLSEN’s “Safe Space Soiree” the weekend before the Day of Silence also obtained promotional posters and other resources to spread the word in SHS about the event.
The Day of Silence is held annually and is respected by individuals all around the world.
