Conglomerate of choir information for curious student

Madeline Marsh, Feature Chief

  • The all-male acapella group SHAG performs at every concert. They practice after school and compete in competitions around the state. It is audition only; auditions are held in fall of the new school year.

    '
  • The Aviator Chorale Ladies sing with accompaniment. A no audition class taken mostly by freshman, Aviator Chorale is a great beginning choir course. They sometimes join up with Aviator Chorale men to sing their pieces.

    '
  • Mr. Kenneth Holdt is the choral director and teaches all choir classes and extracurricular choirs. Holdt travels with the choirs and arranges performances and competitions. He believes in teaching students how to read music.

    '
  • Freshman Kate McNamara-Marslin sings a solo for a combined Aviator Chorale song. The choir classes design their own t-shirts to wear at the spring concert. The boys designed tuxedo shirts while the girls went for a purple shirt with writing and designs.

    '
  • The choirs usually sing with just piano accompaniment. However, occasionally guitar or drums will be added. The band and orchestra has accompanied the choir numerous times.

    '
  • Acapella group Madrigal, consisting of combined SHAG and SWEET, along with a few others, performs at every concert. They travel to different venues throughout the year, such as Twin Lakes Retirement Home, to perform their pieces. Madrigal is an audition only extracurricular; auditions are held in the fall.

    '
  • Aviator Chorale is open to all students, regardless of skill level. If a student wants to take choir, but cannot fit it in their schedule, see Holdt. If there is absolutely no room, consider joining one of SHS’ extracurricular choirs.

    '
  • Freshman Benjamin Swart sings a solo with a Concert Choir woman at the spring concert. Combined Aviator Chorale accompanies them. All choirs sing and dance, though no prior dance skill is needed. Steps are minimal and worked on thoroughly before each performance.

    '
  • Madrigal performs for the spring concert. Consisting mostly of upperclassmen, Madrigal is for advanced singers who are looking for a challenge. They meet after school to practice singing acapella. Holdt plays piano and directs during the practice, but when performing Madrigal is largely independent.
