Football falls in standings

Despite great play from junior running back Ra’Von Bonner, the varsity football team fell to Trotwood-Madison high school of Dayton, Ohio 27-21. Bonner rushed 23 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough to offset the turnovers by SHS.

Multiple fumbled snaps and gaffes by the SHS offense gave Trotwood the extra chances that they needed in order to win the game. SHS did not lead at any point in the game until Bonner scored with 3:09 left in the fourth quarter to put SHS up 21-20, but they were unable to hold on to the lead.

The loss drops SHS to last in the GMC. Multiple other teams have a 1-2 record, but due to tiebreakers, they are listed last on the GMC standings website.

Sophomore Griffin Harris said, “It is a shame that we are in last right now, but with the players we have it is definitely possible to make up some ground.”

Around the GMC, other teams had big wins, as well as big losses. The nationally-ranked Colerain Cardinals fell to D-II reigning state champion La Salle 39-36 in overtime when Ohio State punter/kicker commit Drue Chrisman booted a 41-yard field goal to win the game.

Fairfield remained undefeated by trouncing Dublin Coffman of Dublin, Ohio 28-7, and Middletown notched their first win by defeating Reynoldsburg 26-7. Loveland, thanks to junior running back Luke Waddell, crushed Oak Hills 45-14. Waddell rushed just 19 times, but ran for an astounding 381 yards and five touchdowns.

With GMC in-conference play beginning this week, some notable games to watch for are SHS against Fairfield at Sycamore Stadium and Mason home against Colerain at Atrium Stadium.
