The SHS girls’ gold tennis team has not made the Final Four in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) state tennis tournament in 12 years.
However, for the first time in a decade, Coach Michael Teets and the SHS girls gold tennis team after defeating Ursuline Academy 3-2 on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Jiang said, “For the first time in 12 years, we finally made the state Final Four again. Last year, we were one match away from making the Final Four, but we fell short after losing to Ursuline. It feels great to get revenge and defeat them.”
In order to clinch the match against Ursuline, Jiang defeated sophomore Carolyn Haney in a close 5-7,7-5,6-1 win.
Jiang said, “After winning the match, I let out a huge sigh of relief. At times I didn’t think we were going to win.”
The other three spots in the Final Four have yet to be determined, but SHS will play at the OHSAA tournament in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 18 at Reynoldsburg High School.
