Fight for growing rights
September 30, 2015
The fight to legalize marijuana has taken a new turn with the arguments being made about who will own the land to grow the marijuana.
One of the many arguments that have been made multiple times is the distinct economic benefit to legalizing marijuana. Jeffery Miron, a Harvard economist, predicts that the U.S. is missing out on at least $45 billion in tax revenue by not having the drug legalized across the nation.
People think it should not be limited to a certain number of people allowed to grow. This limited amount of people allowed could limit the amount of revenue through taxes made by the state.
Prosecutor Joe Deters said, “I much rather have to deal with someone who violates the growing laws over someone traffics drugs illegally.”
Deters works with ResponisbleOhio, a group who backs the legalization of marijuana, to conduct a study on the positives and the negatives of marijuana. He recognizes that there will be and is a problem with people trying to grow illegally if there is a set limit. Deters is working with multiple groups to help address this growing problem.
States like Colorado and Washington have unlimited amounts of people and companies which can grow. This equates to an unlimited amount of revenue that is possible through taxes
