Academic Quiz Team buzzes through early competition
December 10, 2015
It happens in every sport. That split-second, right after a decision is made, when everything is left to instinct. In some sports that moment might take place right as the ball leaves a player’s hands.
In Academic Quiz Team (AQT), that moment occurs in the third round, or Lightning Round. It begins and ends within a few seconds. And like in most other sports, it is all about quickness and confidence.
Senior Julia Kumar said, “Most people do not think of AQT as a sport, but players actually need to have the same qualities as all other athletes. We need to have quick reflexes and concentration.”
AQT has started its season with a 4-1 record. Yet, despite the success that the academic team has had thus far, a majority of SHS students know little about a typical match.
Junior Mitch Radokavich said, “We are having a really good season so far. I think that our team this year is very strong, so hopefully we can keep up our winning record.”
Each match begins with a team round, during which four members from each team participate. Each team is asked a question in various categories including, English world literature, American government, and math. Teams have two chances to answer the question correctly, but if they do not answer correctly, the other team has the opportunity to steal. The individual questions are followed by a toss-up question, which either team can buzz in to answer.
The team round is followed by the alphabet round. Each team is given a list of clues. The answers to all of the clues begin with a specifically designated letter. Each team’s alphabet round score is added to their team round score.
The final round is called the lightning round. During this round, the procter asks 20 questions and anyone can buzz in to answer. Once again, each team’s score is added to their total score.
These three rounds make up one game. Each match consists of two games. As a result, a school has the opportunity to add two wins to their season record each match.
Senior Sabrina Kaul said, “AQT isn’t a sport that requires physical activity, but every match is very intense nonetheless.”
