One of the plays from last season was Noises Off. Like this year’s fall production, Noises Off was a comedic production. It was a straight-play rather than a musical.

With The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee under way, SHS’ theatre department is very busy. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical featuring students in one of the two acting ensemble classes.
“[The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee] is a hilarious show with a lot of unique, quirky characters and comedic bits that are extremely entertaining to watch,” said Adam Pelberg, 10.
The show features six awkward spelling bee contestants who attempt to win the bee in a rather comedic manner. The show is Nov. 3, 4, and 5. To purchase tickets visit the Aves Theatre website.
“The show is funny because it highlights what we want to say but would never say out loud. The characters exaggerate the quirks we all have but are too scared to show,” said Amanda Jensen, 11.
The show elaborates on the contestants’ home lives and does so in a musical manor.
“It takes academics and make you laugh about it. The characters are so lovable that you are sad to see them go,” said Jensen.
What makes this production different from any other musicals is the lack of structure. The show does not have one defined conflict, other than the characters’ desire to win the contest. There is so much opportunity for comedic moments and musical numbers to steal the show.
