The mens’ swim team placed first last year at GMC championships. Multiple swimers and relay teams qualified for District and State meets, but the team did not place at State. The returning swimmers are looking to win the GMC for the second year in a row and believe they have a really strong chance to do so.

Only a few days are left until tryouts for the Varsity swim team are underway. Tryouts take place on November 7 and November 8, and while all are welcome, only experienced swimmers will make the cut.

Positions on the varsity team are open to everyone, regardless of grade or gender, but the two-day tryout practices are designed to be challenging for anyone who is not already a swimmer.

“The tryouts aren’t especially difficult to anybody who has swam competitively, but they help the coaches see who is willing to work for a spot on the team,” said Elliot Carl, 10.

The mens’ swim team won first place in last year’s GMC competition and is hoping to do so again with only three graduated seniors and many strong swimmers returning this year.

The womens’ team fell to Mason last year for the GMC title and placed second. They are seeking to rebuild after a large group of seniors have graduated and are very open to more swimmers to join the team this year.

“We lost a ton of great swimmers last year, and we are in a very tough spot. We need everyone we can get this year if we want to win the GMC,” said Ania Campbell, 10.

Everyone with swimming experience is invited to come to tryouts November 7 and 8. Practice runs from 2:30-4:30 p.m., and results will be posted on Wednesday to show who has made the team and who has been cut.

“We want everybody who is interested to come to tryouts next week, and if they don’t make it, to still swim on JV and try out next year,” said captain Matt Scheutz, 12.
