Chinese Kunqu Opera Troupe to visit
January 25, 2017
12 artists from China will be coming to SHS on February 2 to promote Chinese culture and share their performance with students.
“Kun Opera” or “Kunqu Opera” is one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera, evolving from the Kunshan melody. It dominated Chinese theatre arts from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
In 2001, the group was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The group will observe the AP Chinese class and interact with students before eating lunch in the Hub and demonstrating their performances in the little Theater during sixth bell. Their display will include “The Monastery Gate” as well as the introduction and performance of the dizi, a Chinese traditional bamboo flute.
