  • CENTER STAGE. Irena’s Vow is a play written by Dan Gordon. It was on broadway for a period of time and was performed at SHS on Feb. 2, 3, and 4. The show is about a Polish worker during the holocaust who hides twelve Jews in the basement of the German commander.

  • ALL AGES. The role of Irena Gut Opdyke is a huge one, so in SHS’ production there was an “Old Irena” and a “Young Irena.” Emily Tyler, 12 played the former and Kate McNamara-Marsland, 11 the latter. “It was nice that I got to focus in on the character during one specific stage of her life,” said McNamara-Marsland.

  • STAND STRAIGHT. The show is unique in that it features multiple perspectives. The perspectives of Polish workers, Jews in hiding, and German officers are captured. Drew Lawrence, 10 and Quinn Rile, 11 portrayed Germans.

  • EFFECTS. Considering that the show is a straight play with a simple set, an effort was made to add other elements. Steam, smoke, and transition music was implemented. “The simple, yet effective elements definitely added something,” said Shayna Kling, 10.

  • VIEWS SHIFT. Nick McDonough portrays a Polish worker by the name of Schultz. His character plays a big part in Irena’s success. He seems to know what is taking place, but never says a word.
