SLAM. Junior Jake Vayo-Smith gets a take-down in his quarterfinals match. Vayo-Smith won 9-3.

The wrestling team performed well at their sectionals, securing a spot at districts. They competed for two days, bringing 13 athletes with them.

“This weekend was great progress for our team. We had five placers at a very hard sectional tournament. We have four people competing in the district tournament this Fri. Mar. 2 and Sat. Mar. 3,” said Jake Vayo-Smith, 11.

At the end of the competition, two people placed third, two people placed fourth, and one individual finished fifth.

“Senior Josh Haunert and junior Ryan Draugn both finished third at the tournament and qualified for districts. Senior J.D Folz and I both finished fourth, coming up just a few points short but still qualifying for the district tournament as well.

“Sophomore Izumi Harney finished fifth at the tournament and will be a district alternate,” Vayo-Smith said.

The team looks forward to districts and to seeing who will advance to the state tournament and hopefully receive placement there.

“The district tournament will decide who goes onto the state tournament held in Columbus. The top four finishers from each weight class at districts will qualify for the state tournament with the fifth-place finishers being alternates,” Vayo-Smith said.
