  • SAVE. Freshman Christopher Gall is one of the goalies for JV water polo this year. During the game, there are seven players in the pool, one being the goalie. It is the goalies job to block and stay alert to any incoming balls. “I play water polo because I get to swim and we have a lot of fun,” Gall said. All photos courtesy of McDaniel’s Photography.

  • TEAM. Mr. Nicholas Hellwig is the team’s head coach, along with Mrs. Beth Quinones as the assistant coach. It is important that the team stays focused and keeps working as hard as they can. “My favorite part about water polo is the team atmosphere and the bond with the players and the coaches,” said Ben Fribourg, 10.

  • FOCUS. Bob Wise, 11 is another goalie for both the JV and Varsity teams. Goalies have privileges that members in the field do not have, like not getting a foul for touching the bottom, being allowed to catch the ball with two hands, and having permission to punch the ball with their fist. “Most of us really have a passion for the sport,” Fribourg said.

  • PASS. Junior Matthew Neal passes the ball to a teammate. There are two passes in water polo: wet and dry. In dry passes the ball does not touch the water, whereas in a wet pass the ball touches the water. The team’s record thus far is 7-4-1, and at their home game vs. Mason High School on Sept. 11 they won 15-3.

  • READY. Peter Hausfeld, 9 gets ready to throw the ball to another player. Boys JV has three more games this season, including a home game against Milford High School on Oct. 2. Their last game will be against Princeton High School on Oct. 11. “How brutal a team is really depends on that team, like Mason [High School] is pretty mild,” Gall said.
