Seniors prepare to serve

SERVE. Seniors were given options of various locations to serve. Many seniors are hoping to return to their elementary schools. “I have so many memories from Symmes [Elementary] so it will be fun to go back and see all of my teachers,” said Emma Long, 12.

This year, senior service day will take place on Tues., Oct. 16. Seniors are to report to the HS auditorium at 8 a.m. and will serve from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. before being excused for the day.

Seniors signed up for their location of service via a signup genius that was sent out to all seniors in aviator bell by email.

Many different location and service opportunities are open for volunteering.

School locations include Blue Ash Elementary, Maple Dale Elementary, Symmes Elementary, Montgomery Elementary and the Greene School (the building in general, but volunteers can also work with the band or orchestra at the Greene School).

Parks in the area need assistance, including Weller, Montgomery, Pioneer, Dulle, and Swaim parks.

The district needs specific help including the Sycamore Community Schools Maintenance Department, SHS Athletics and Flight Fest Preparation.

Other service locations include Cleats for Kids, Gorman Heritage Farm, Kenzie’s Closet, Matthew 25 Ministries, Operation Give Back, New Life Furniture, Wesley Chapel, Gabriel’s Place, The Lodge Retirement Home, and La Soupe.

There is also a “surprise me” location- those students are open to going wherever staff directs them the morning of Senior Service Day.

Many seniors are excited to return to schools they attended, such as their elementary school.

“I’m excited for senior service day because I get to go back to my elementary school and read books to the students,” said Emma Long, 12.

Seniors are a big part of the day, but the event would not be possible without those who organized it, such as Mr. Benjamin Tilton and Ms. Ashley Warren.

“Senior Service Day is a chance for the class of 2019 to give a little back to the community in which they live.

“Our hope is that this day will ignite a passion for service that seniors carry with them as they finish high school and leave these hallowed halls,” Tilton said.
