Strike Up the Band for Hunger plays music for good cause

  • MARCH. Strike Up the Band for Hunger is an annual event that began in 2015 and aims to provide non perishables and give back to the Sycamore Community through Operation Give Back. There are no tickets, but donating two cans of nonperishable foods, such as canned meats and vegetables, acts as the ticket to get into the event.

  • TEAM. The marching band is composed of several sections that work together including percussion, trumpets, trombones, alto and tenor saxophone, and clarinets. “My section is the best part of marching band, because you create great bonds with your friends, and they become like family to you,” said Allen Crimmel, 11.

  • PREHISTORIC. Sophomore Kira Washington spins her flags depicting prehistoric dinosaurs and animals. The show includes music from “The Land Before Time” and several banners and props exhibiting the theme.

  • CONDUCT. Junior Aria Oliver conducts the marching band. Drum majors including Oliver, Alejandro Bresolin, and Daniel Halstead alternate conducting. “I love the people, and even though we work really hard at rehearsal, it’s super fun because afterwards we can go and hang out with friends,” said Marie Baldwin, 11.

  • LEAD. Mr. Jim Blankenship, the SHS marching band director, started Strike Up the Band for Hunger in 2015. This years Strike Up the Band for Hunger took place on Fri., Nov. 2 from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For those who couldn’t make it to this years Strike Up the Band for Hunger, make sure to come support the marching band and Sycamore community at next year’s event.
