BOOKBANNING. We have all heard of the efforts to ban books sweeping the U.S. education system. Books such as “The Kite Runner”, “Maus”, and “To Kill a Mockingbird”—pillars of the U.S. education system, all of which depict grim and heartbreaking times in history, such as the Holocaust and the Jim Crow era—are being challenged in schools around the nation. And book banning, something that I thought only occurred in movies like “Footloose”, has only gotten closer and closer to Ohio.

BEND… AND SNAP! SHS theater is “bending and snapping” at Harvard in their production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical”! Tickets are on sale now at avestheatre.org for April 7-9 at 7 p.m. and April 10 at 2 p.m.

IT’S ABOUT TIME. On March 15, the U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to make daylight savings time permanent starting in 2023. The act they decided upon is cheerfully dubbed The Sunshine Protection Act and means that the time we operate on during the summer months will be what we use all year long. If the House of Representatives ends up voting in favor of the bill, it is likely that we will soon be past tediously switching our clocks and will not have to give up those random extra hours of sleep.
    It’s About Time
WOMENS HISTORY MONTH. With its humble beginnings as an obligatory declaration by Jimmy Carter in 1981, Women’s History Month originally began as Women’s History Week. Only in 1995 was it determined that women and their achievements would be recognized for the entire month of March, not just what had been seven days during a 365 day year.

NATIONAL RED CROSS MONTH. As some people may be aware, the month of March is known as Red Cross month. Especially in this time of uncertainty, every one of us should take the time to appreciate those who are constantly there to help us when we need it most, sometimes even risking their lives to ensure our safety.
Several types of medical professionals surround us in our daily lives. There are EMTs and first responders, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, veterinarians, and psychiatrists, just to name a few. Each and every day, our front-line workers ensure our safety and health and provide us with the help we need. However, as they have demonstrated during the pandemic, they can do a lot more than just that.
