Blast to the Past

It’s hard to believe, I know. We are in high school now. Responsibilities, opportunities, and stresses have flooded our brains. Take a break from your crazy busy life and, for a second, take a trip down memory lane with me. Let’s explore the trends of our elementary and middle school years and laugh at how much we have all grown.

  • SHOOTOUT. This was definitely a popular toy for younger kids. We found so much joy in chasing our friends and thinking we had all this power, when in reality, it was just a styrofoam bullet. Nerf is still a huge company, and there are so many more products available to younger kids who still find these types of toys exciting!

  • CRAFTY. These were the go-to craft! Perler beads are small, plastic beads that can be arranged on a small peg board to make designs, ranging from simple to extremely detailed. Afterwards, you would get your design ironed and see how the plastic melts, your beads stick together, and your design is permanent. The focus and determination it took to place these small beads one by one on the board really enticed us as children!

  • CREATIVITY. Rainbow Loom was crazy popular in its time. The possibilities of things you could make were endless. There was always a new design to make, some new color bands to buy, or a new YouTube bracelet tutorial just waiting for you to watch. Sophomore Alison Temple said, “I had a rainbow loom when I was 12…it was complicated to make the big ones.” Phone cases, Starburst designs, Fishtail braids, and many more designs really got our creative juices flowing as kids!

  • CHALLENGE. Legos are still so famous today. They combine focus, logic skills, and fun all together, making them the perfect toy for children. No matter what you had already built, there were always more sets and pieces to explore. There was no end to your imagination. There were even some LEGO kits that had over 1,000 pieces, making it an enjoyable challenge to complete.

  • SCENTS GALORE. When you walk into Bath and Body Works, you are instantly surrounded by all the smells and products. In elementary and middle school, people would love to collect body washes, perfumes, and small hand sanitizers. Freshman Maithilee Teredesai said, “Everyone had hand sanitizers in middle school and everyone used to compare scents with each other.” With so many amazing smells, how could a kid not just want to have the whole store?
