Trying to find a quiet and peaceful place to work at SHS can be difficult. Different types of students need different types of environments in order to focus. Loud noises, talking, uncomfortable sitting areas, and distracting scenery can make it tough to pay attention and get coursework done. SHS students answered a poll to pick their favorite study spot on campus and here are the top ten results:
#10 – Lower Math
This area is a quiet place to get homework done, but it is not as peaceful as Upper Math. There are chairs without backs which can be very uncomfortable for some students. It can get a bit loud during lunch because of noise carrying over from the commons.Â
#9 – History Wing
This wing is not the most popular place to get work done. The space is smaller, but still feels open enough so you do not feel cramped. There are small group seating areas that limit you to sitting with only a few friends or partners. Plus, it is close to the classrooms, which is convenient if you need to ask your teacher questions.
#8 – Upper Math
Upper math is a quiet space where you can study and work alone or with a group of fellow students. This area has big tables, which are great for spreading out your school supplies. There are both booths and regular chairs so you have the option to sit where you are most comfortable. Having the big windows facing out to the courtyard can be a distraction sometimes, but it can also be more relaxing for some.Â
#7 – Booth in Language Hallway
This is a comfy spot for groups to work or just hang out while getting work done individually. Unfortunately, it can only fit a few people at a time. Most importantly, unlike the other study areas, there is a whiteboard for brainstorming ideas. This is very useful and can be the reason someone picks this spot over other spots.
#6 – Comfy Chairs in Science
Looking for somewhere to sit with comfortable seating, a leg rest, and a perfect-sized table to work on? Well, here is the spot for you! Being relaxed while you work can be very beneficial for some, and the comfy chairs in the science wing provide this. Additionally, there are not many distractions around, so it is a quiet place unless there is group work going on in the classrooms.Â
#5 – Any Hallway
The hallways in SHS are not just for getting from one class to another; they are also a spot for students to take a moment to recharge or finish something quickly. Some hallways have booths or normal chairs, but the seating is not always the most comfortable in the hallway, especially if you are there for a while. The space around is usually quiet, but sometimes there will be students walking by.Â
#4 – Commons
The commons is not just a place to eat — it is also a place where people can somewhat pay attention and finish their school assignments. In the commons, the seats can be a little hard and uncomfortable to sit on, which can take away from your learning time. Just like the hub, the commons is a very open environment.Â
#3 – Courtyard
Having the privilege of sitting outside to work while usually being stuck inside all day is very enjoyable. Although the picnic tables are not the ideal seating area for studying, it is very peaceful and you have an extremely nice view.Â
#2 – Synnovation Lab
The Synnovation Lab has a lot of different features that help different types of students. Sometimes being in this room can seem crazy and might not be for some people. However, there are different working areas for every student, including movie seats, normal chairs, rolling chairs, and booths. All of the Synnovation Lab teachers are in the space, so you can access their help if you are struggling with an assignment.
#1 – Hub
The Hub has a lot of different seating options, so you can find a spot to work quietly or sit with friends to work on a project. The space is very open which can help people not feel trapped or enclosed while they work. It also has big tables which are great for spreading out your materials when you need a lot of space to work on assignments and use multiple resources.
Finding a quiet place to study and do work at SHS isn’t always easy, especially with all the noise, distractions, and uncomfortable seating. Each student has different needs when it comes to focusing, so knowing the best study spots on SHS’s campuses is very important.
