Michael Vesio, 10, is making history on the golf course for SHS boys golf. At 15, he has already become one of the first boys from SHS to qualify for districts as an individual in years. His dedication and love for the game has helped him reach a new level.
As just a sophomore, Vesio is on track to lead a very successful golf career. “I mean, I’d love to go D1. I think I have a lot of potential and can hopefully get there,” said Vesio. Vesio has worked very hard to get where he is today. He credits his mom is the reason he started golf in the first place. “We were just chilling, and my mom suggested we go to the driving range for fun. It’s been nonstop from there,” Vesio noted. Everything always comes with challenges. “It’s easy to let one bad hole mess with you,” he said. “I’ve had to really focus on keeping a good attitude and staying positive throughout the round.”
Vesio’s qualification for districts marks a major milestone not only for the SHS boys golf team, but for him personally. Vesio said, “Qualifying for districts as an individual has definitely been a major highlight this golf season. This was the goal I set for myself at the beginning of the season, I’m just so glad it came true.” This is only Vesio’s second year on the golf team, there are many more milestones to break. While preparing for matches is difficult, Vesio said “calming myself down, getting the mental side of my game ready is a big thing for me.” Vesio has had an eventful season, but he says an extremely memorable moment for him was “during sectionals. I tied with four other guys and I ended up winning the playoff hole, which led me to districts. This was definitely the most nervous I’ve ever been when playing golf.”
What keeps Vesio coming back to the course? “Hitting the green, It’s the best part.” he said. “And playing with my friends, mostly just doing what I love.” It is clear Vesio’s journey is just beginning. With an early qualification under his belt and a strong drive, his future in golf looks incredibly bright. Whether it is the thrill of the competition or the satisfaction of hitting the green, his passion for the game is no joke. For SHS and Vesio himself, this season has been one to remember and there is no doubt much more to come.
