Matteo Meli, 11, represents the kind of well-rounded success defining The Leaf’s ’18 Under 18′.
Meli’s musical journey started in fifth grade at the school’s instrument fair, where he chose the double bass because it was big and funny. What started as a joke quickly became a passion after he joined the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Nouveau Program, exposing him to a more committed and inspiring group of musicians. Matteo is currently first chair of the bass section of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO) and also plays in smaller chamber groups outside of school. His dedication to growth has made him stand out with some of the most talented young musicians in Cincinnati.
Beyond music, Meli is equally impressive in the classroom. Known for being highly motivated and intellectually curious, his interest in physics started freshman year in Mr. Perry’s class. He enjoys the way of thinking–questioning, forming ideas, testing data, and his interest continued the next year with Mr. Gutenkust.
Meli also excels in cross country. He chose the sport because it seemed easier, but it turned out to be harder than he expected. However, his passion for running took off after being with friends and gaining a new appreciation for “locking in.”
Matteo Meli continues to raise the bar. Aspiring to pursue physics while continuing music and running later in life, his commitment and talent to balance a demanding schedule is no small feat, making him a standout junior whose future is as promising as it is impressive.
