On the night of Saturday, February 7, the SHS Choral Program hosted their annual Cabaret, a choir show featuring a range of songs from pop culture and musical theater, in the Hub. Around 30 different students performed using a range of instruments, whether individually, in small groups of two or three, or in large Octaviation groups.
But what exactly is Cabaret? A Cabaret show is a relatively informal choir performance consisting of a large group of people performing songs one person or group at a time, typically held in small communal spaces. Traditionally, Cabaret performers will hand-pick their songs to follow a certain narrative or theme, although sometimes they are picked simply to represent the performer themselves. While the event usually focuses on vocal performances, violinists, pianists, and guitarists also joined the singers this year.
SHS Choral Program members of all grades participate in this two-act show, performing songs like “Sunday in the Park with George” and “Someone Like You.” Sycamore’s Octaviation Green, White, and Gold groups also each had individual performances, singing “Reckless,” “Traitor,” and “The Weather” respectively.
The Hub was also decorated for the event with purple and green lights strung across the room and behind the performers, tables set with small lamps and drinks, and the room rearranged into a mini-theater.
