SHS seniors report declining motivation as graduation approaches, raising the question of whether “senioritis” is real or simply an excuse. As the school year enters its final stretch, many seniors say their mindset toward school has noticeably shifted compared to previous years, often due to burnout and college decisions already being finalized.
The idea of “senioritis” is commonly associated with a drop in motivation, effort, and engagement among graduating students. According to the American Psychological Association, academic burnout can occur when prolonged stress leads to exhaustion and decreased interest in schoolwork, which aligns with many seniors’ experiences.
Senior Chana Horewitz, 12, described her motivation this year as “plummeting,” adding that her attitude toward school has gotten worse. “I can’t even think right now… I am using no brain cells anymore,” Horewitz said. “My grades have been good but not my studying.”
Elliot Ribar, 12, shared a similar experience. “Ever since I knew I was getting into college, I don’t care now,” said Ribar. She explained that expectations surrounding senior year also play a role in her mentality. “Teachers don’t expect you to try as hard because they always talk about how it’s senior year,” she said.
Horewitz said, “Burnout and knowing your grades don’t affect getting into college as much anymore” is what has caused her senioritis.
Senioritis is also visible in seniors’ daily behaviors. Ribar noted that it often looks like “missing a lot of school, not studying as hard, or even doing homework.” She also admitted that her own habits have changed. “My grades have gotten worse and I don’t think I have studied once this year because I’m ready to be done,” she explained.
Both students believe senioritis is real and somewhat justified. “We worked so hard for four years and we deserve to be able to relax a little bit, especially after working so hard on college admissions,” Ribar said.
As graduation approaches, senioritis continues to shape seniors’ final months of high school, leaving many balancing pride in their accomplishments with a growing readiness to move on. Senioritis definitely seems to have an effect on students and how their senior year mindset is much different than other years.
